In the Middle Ages, whips were used in Europe for chastisement or punishment. However, in the United States slaves were whipped with this tool until the 19th century, even today it still finds its place in some parts of the world as a means of punishment.
Most people, however, are familiar with the whip only in connection with animals. Figuratively, we may have in mind the image of a tamer in the ring who sounds the whip with a loud crack to make a lion or tiger obey.
